Top 9 Things People Desire

In an email survey, I asked willing participants:

"If you could say in one word what you want more of in life, what would that be?"

Among the responses, those desired most are those listed below witha. few highlighted comments. I share my take on these points, and suggest why people often feel can’t get enough of the elusive experiences or states. See which stand out for you.  Leave a comment about your feelings and experience:

1: Happiness

Biggest challenge: “Not knowing what I want to do.”

Many seek to achieve happiness as if its a carrot on the end of s stick, or find it hard to keep once experienced. In my professional work, I’ve seen that happiness often escapes people if (1) they find it hard to define happiness and  2) they are taught the key is external. As a result, happiness is a perpetual moving target.

2: Abundance

Biggest challenge: “Not having enough money or time to accomplish the things I want to do.”

I’ve interested with people of diverse walks of life. In many cases, regardless of what we earn, we somehow feel we never have enough.  The question is: how much money do you really need to feel fulfilled? And what other views on wealth and abundance stand out? if you want more money, do you understand the key principles and behaviors required to generate it? Its important to review your money "story."

3: Freedom

Biggest challenge: “Having the freedom to find my ‘true purpose’ or being lit up by the day-to-day at work.”

Ah, freedom. We all want it, yet so many people I meet are resistant to doing what’s required to get it.

What is necessary to experience freedom? I’ve seen that it requires making yourself right (not wrong), following your own authentic values and beliefs, and building strong boundaries to protect yourself from what others will tell you is right for you or try to force on you. And it takes forging your own path in life and work, despite challenges and rejection. It requires boldness and courage to make yourself your own highest authority.  Connecting with inner passion and commitment are stepping stones to rediscovering freedom.

4: Peace

Biggest challenge: “Lack of clarity about who I am and my purpose.”

We long for peace,. Peace from noise, chatter, pressure, responsibilities. We also want peace from the painful thumping inside our own heads – the conflicts and strain we inflict on ourselves every minute to be better, stronger, smarter (prettier, thinner, better parents, _______ [you fill in the blank]).

Peace, I’ve found, doesn’t come from being better at anything, or even figuring anything out. Attaining peace is a practice that we need to cultivate, regardless of what's going on. We have to carve out space within ourselves and in our lives to tune into peace, do the work to expand peace as a feeling and commit to it. You don’t have to know your purpose to be at peace – you just have to commit to being at peace, and building daily practices.

5: Joy

Biggest challenge: “How to find the right role or position for me now that will bring joy in my work.”

I’ve observed how the process of stepping up to our highest potential and honoring our best visions for contributing to the world in a meaningful way does indeed pave the way for more joy. I believe (and have lived) that we simply can’t feel joy in our lives if the work we do pains us. We’re not able to effectively separate who we are from what we do (and why would we want to?).

So when you’re stuck in work you hate, with people you don’t respect, supporting outcomes that feel wrong to you, then your life as a whole can’t help but be joyless, even if your personal or family life brings you happiness. Joy emerges as you ar authentic and simply be true to yourself.

6: Balance

Biggest challenge: “Balancing my need/desire for flexibility while making enough money and having the benefits I want.”

I’ve researched work-life balance extensively, and believe that it’s doable only under one condition: that you  honour your priorities. It takes understanding your non-negotiables (what you won’t compromise on, what you won’t say “yes” to), and then living from that knowledge, and making the "right" decisions that align with your top life priorities. If you can’t do that, you can’t create or sustain balance.

7: Fulfillment

Biggest challenge: “Utilizing my potential in the best possible way, for myself and for others.”

Fulfillment can be defined as this: “Satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one’s abilities or character.” We simply can’t experience fulfillment if we’re not living up to what we know is our highest and best potential. Have you ever settled for something much less than you know you want or deserve? It hurts – a lot.

It dawns we must leave our comfort zones, and identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about what we’re capable of, so that we can become the person we dream to be. We may also need to leave some people and relationships behind (the ones that don’t support us to soar higher and grow because it threatens them).

Fulfillment is possible when you are filling up your cup, honoring your own potential, not forsaking yourself by putting everyone else in front of you. Fulfillment comes when you take bold actions that say “yes” to the future vision of you, even well before it’s “hatched.”

8: Confidence

Biggest challenge: “Feeling like I have something to offer now, rather than feeling constantly as if I’m not ready and need more training.”

I’ve seen in working with many people and in my former therapy and corporate work, that we humans only see what’s at the tip of our noses. When we’re in situations that are hurtful, demeaning, challenging, we sometimes lose confidence, forget who we are  We're often taught that it's not advisable to think for ourselves, and we shouldn't follow our own path if it conflicts with the values of our "tribe." In short, we're taught not to believe that we can govern our own lives well if we don't listen to our authority figures, family members, teachers and others around us.  that keeps us stuck living someone else's life, is extremely damaging and severely limits our potential and our happiness. Confidence comes from acknowledging our own magnificence.

9: That which we cannot put our finger on

"This is the intangible"

The reality is that it's a tough world out there, with many challenges we're simply not prepared to face. But throughout those challenges, there are countless ways we can remain true to ourselves, leverage our gifts, and foster our self-esteem and passion for life and work. And we can continually build our confidence, happiness, and fulfillment, despite these challenges. For that, we need an abundance of self-love, and also support from others who don't want to tell us what to do, but instead, want to help us follow our own, internal value system and beliefs. And we need to believe in ourselves without fail, despite the evidence around us that says we’re not “ready” to soar in creating what we long to.

Sense of Love is Changing

Notice we cannot simply show up half-heartedly and expect the world to show up, and reveal itself completely in all dimensions. The universe always has our back, yet what appears in our scope of awareness mirrors how truthful we are with ourselves.  That is, we cannot see what is vibrationally out-of-sync with us. When we do not fully accept all of self, we do not accept parts of reality, keep them from entering our perception and experience, postpone wholeness.

The depth of insight we have into self (why we do the things we do or not) shapes soul's evolution. If we only share glimpses of truth, do not validate all parts of ourself, stay ignorant of our dishonesty, we simply catch glimpses of wider realities. All feelings are essential to growth and any we avoid, suppress as shadows, limit our reality. We only experience wider realities to the degree we are willing to face and explore deeper parts of ourselves. This takes courage.
When unconscious, we do not change because we do not recognize anything needs to change. Until we bring light to our unconscious wounds and patterns, grow in our discernment, develop discipline and patience, we are not ready to accept responsibility for our own joy, happiness, peace and serenity. Thus, this cannot emerge in our direct experience. "Ah-ha" moments change everything.
To connect with something beyond ourselves allows everything to be as is, suddenly know nothing interferes with our happiness. It is everywhere, whether we experience it or not. By letting go of control, learning to trust and surrender, we recall what it is to love all parts of self, transmute energies other than love and integrate aspects of self we resist. Our sense of what love is, calls for love and messages about love, change as a reflection of expanding consciousness. It dawns as we change, the world around us changes. Wider realities emerge.

Listen to the Soul

On the surface, we may appear poor and aspire to get something different, something more. Yet, only a rich person can be poor. This 'rich' is not about money. Material riches are not true wealth. If ambition remains, we are poor. What we have or do not have is not the point. When we have enough, desire and dissatisfaction disappear. The vanishing of desire is the meaning of "enough". An analogy can be made with fears we adopt. The letting go of fears is a way to expand spiritual wealth, which allows other kinds of abundance to flow freely.

Spiritual wealth is an intangible kind of richness. To nourish spiritual richness is not about going to church or adopting a particular faith or religion. Its about living by universal principles. It is about qualities and experiences that nourish love, respect and acceptance, trustworthiness, honesty, truthfulness, peace of mind, compassion, contentment, honour, playfulness, love and spontaneity. If we do not embody a reservoir of spiritual wealth, then no amount of money or material gain can make us happy. Spiritual wealth guides us to live in integrity with intuition, the voice of inner wisdom. It guides us to our own source of happiness which is then mirrored energetically in the external.

In light of global upheavals, many people fear uncertainty, fear losing points of reference, find themselves hesitating to move forward in a soul-guided way. We are taught to doubt ourselves, question our ability to survive, question how we can continue living in the lifestyle we have been even if we give parts of it up. The prospect of stepping outside the familliar triggers deep wounds, issues or patterns of our respective lineages or unseen blocks.

If we choose to listen to the soul, when we put up an emotional wall, this is an soul-guided invitation to decode and dismantle it to grow as a soul. Facing fear is the process of rediscovering true unlimited richness inside ourselves. It is part of taking full and complete responsibility for our role in creating where we are and all our conditions or accepting them. Its knowing all is possible. Making choices that whole-heartedly put inner knowing into practice is art of letting go, creating new Soul guided relationships and conditions as realities

Shift from struggle to surrender

Notice we are each making our way from unconscious struggle to surrender. Some of us may feel we struggle more than surrender, but we get here. Every moment, we have opportunities to shift energy, vibration. The matrix of interactions is complex. Everybody has unique experiences and manages them the best they can based on their references and level of consciousness. We see through the lens of fear (ego) or the mirror of love, acceptance (Soul).
Bottom line is, when we struggle in the external world with events that evoke discomfort, resistance or anything other than peace, its because there's imbalance inside us. We do not feel okay. We store energy that bothers us. It follows we feel restless about all we repress, deny or attempt to escape. As the result, we struggle to experience the outside world in ways that make us feel better. So, external things cannot bring lasting happiness.
Ironically, people struggle with the intention not to struggle. They struggle to forget or let go of their inner struggle. In essence, ego struggles to get things the way it wants and keep them that way. Fighting, disagreement, ill health, all happen because we each have different ideas about what will bring us peace, fulfillment, satisfaction, wellness. And struggle is not spirituality.
Curious thing is, nobody ever satisfies a desire by fulfilling it. Its like we close the door on one desire to feel better until something else begins to bother us. Nothing we do is ever wrong or bad. When people get what they want, they fear losing it. There must be a better way to know peace. We can learn and grow from it all.
The spiritual journey is very much about the inward shift. Then, the competition and struggle are suddenly with yourself. Do what challenges the 'self' concept. If we struggle inside and decide we have no problem then this is not the answer either. Spirituality is not a struggle and not denial of lingering struggles. Fighting with the self is common. What does it mean to grow spiritualy? It is not about how long you can meditate or how quiet you can be. Its the process of surrendering to the fact things are not as you think. Everything has a reason for the way it is without us. It is the result of cause and effect, universal laws. No accidents exist.
Some say the spiritual journey really begins with the willingness to take responsibility for our role in unfolding events. It also takes everything being as it is to interact as it does. Beyond judgement, everything is the result of all that ever was. Wake up to realize what is right here, now. Its not about whether you like it or not. Same thing with every moment. All forces invite us to surrender honour, respect, this moment in front of us. Each is very special. Something inside is distracts us from the reality of the moment in front of us. Shift away from struggle to seeand feel the blessings right where we are. This is the act of letting go of the unreal. We are each on a unique trajectory of radiating divine light, joining dots and streaming beyond space-time.
