In the Way of the Peaceful Warrior, I could totally relate to everything Dan was feeling and how an emptiness filled him and that there had to be something more than dangling carrots before the cart and winning championships.
The book taught me to be more mindful in the moment. It had me look at my thoughts more clearly and to challenge any fears that crossed my path.
I remember the scene where he was looking into Strawberry Creek, which is a real place in Berkeley near to where I grew up. Dan wondered how deep the water was after a rain storm. Well, Socrates through him off the bridge and into the water to satisfy his wish. I still can't get over it. It made me realize that if I had a question, that I should go head first into investigating the answer. Follow your feelings. Learn to flow with the Moment.
Another thing that struck me was to not try to do any motion, such as in martial arts or gymnastics, but to surrender to the motion as if to enter the field of intention its self and let the body meld with the intended action. Allow it to be and become that which you place your attention upon.
In a way Dan Millman became Mindful of all his actions which led him to feel more alive.
What struck me at the time was that Socrates sent Dan out into the world for ten years since the arena for the peaceful warrior was daily life. He had learned how to make a good cup of tea, but felt that he hadn't found what he was looking for out in the world. But this its self was a point. He needed to go out into the world to realize that what he was looking for wasn't of the world. It was always here right now. The place he was searching for was inside him.
I liked the Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior too where Dan went to Hawaii and learned the ways of a Shaman. This resonated highly with me and I later investigated the Ways of the Shaman because of Dan Millman's influence.
Oh, and the book is called "No Ordinary Moments". Each moment is forever Unique. Once realized, one becomes more mindful of all actions.
